FRASER'S HILL

Little England

Fraser's Hill Clock Tower

Discovered in 1890s by Scottish prospector Louis James Fraser, this area was originally established as a tin mining community for its rich tin deposits. However, mining activity here was short-lived as the tin ore was depleted by 1913. In 1915, Louis James Fraser was reported to be missing and in 1917, the then bishop of Singapore rediscovered this place and saw its potential while on the search for the man. The idea to develop this area into a hill station was brought to fruition by the authorities. Just a stone's throw away from Kuala Lumpur, Fraser's was a hill resort that offered cool respite against the tropical heat for the British officers back in the Colonial days.

Heritage Trail : The Cottage

Perched atop the Titiwangsa Ridge and nestled among the lush mountains of Pahang, Fraser's Hill is just about 2 1/2 hours drive from Kuala Lumpur. Perfect for a weekend getaway. To reach the top, visitors will have to brave the narrow winding road uphill, starting from the bottom of the hill near Kuala Kubu Bharu. Thankfully this road goes only one way and there's a separate downhill route on the other side of the hill.

Fraser's Hill has an average altitude of 1,200 metres high but reaches a highest point of 1,500 metres at the Telekoms Loop. The hill station gets least rainfall from April to September so it would be best to visit during these months if you dislike wet surroundings. This being said, the weather could still be unpredictable and when we visited a couple of weeks ago in late August, it drizzled for a few hours in the evening. But we liked it though. Gave the whole place a cool, foggy atmosphere without being too cold. Average temperature here is between 22 C to 28 C during the day, and 16 C to 20 C at night.

This hill station is famous and well known among nature lovers and outdoor enthusiasts. Cyclists and hikers frequent this place, as well as bird watchers from all over the country. This hill station is home to over 250 bird species and is one of the hotspots for bird-watching in the country. There are also various nature walk trails available ranging from the more family-friendly Maxwell Trail to the longer, more challenging Pine Tree Trail. The latter ends near the Jeriau Waterfall, which is also accessible by road if you are planning for a swim/picnic without going through the hike.

Fraser's Hill is also the perfect spot for visitors seeking peace and tranquility, some quiet time from the hustle and bustle of the city. It is home to the Royal Fraser's Hill Golf Course, one of Malaysia's oldest nine-hole golf courses.

We got the chance to revisit this sleepy little town again after 6 years. The whole town was still very much the same, except for a bigger crowd since we went on a public holiday long weekend.

Taman Awam Bukit Fraser is the perfect place to chill and relax, especially with if you bring kids along. There was a small playground nearby and a little stall selling bubble wands and snacks. The park is right next to a row of restaurants, and after taking a moment to revel in the gush of fresh mountaineous air at the park, we had lunch in one of the restaurants. Though it was noon, the weather was cool and very nice.

I loved just chilling here at the park, enjoying the cool breeze coming from the mountain ranges.

After a good, hearty, malaysian-dish meal, we chilled a bit more at the park before heading to the hotel. We stayed at Ye Olde Smokehouse Hotel, just for the experience. We had a pleasant time there. For more on that, read THIS.

We actually planned a rather full itinerary which consisted of a visit to The Paddock for horse-riding, and also Allan's Water. But since we ended up starting our journey a bit later than planned, we had to cancel these 2 as they are closed during lunch hour from 12pm to 2pm (info from google).

In the evening, we headed off to the Glasshouse Cafe - a quaint little cafe that serves delicious cakes and drinks, and houses a selection of cacti and succulents. The general ambience and vibe at the cafe was nice and relaxing, and we had a great time there in the foggy evening. Read more about the cafe HERE.

After a dose of cheesecake and cocoa, we took some customary photos at the Fraser's Clock Tower and just strolled around the area.

We had dinner at Aida Daniya Restaurant and English Teahouse. There were mixed reviews on google, so I decided to just give it a go - also we were not really spoilt for choice there.

Aida Daniya Restaurant & English Teahouse

As it turned out, the food there was very good. Mostly everything we ordered were delicious, and I especially love their carbonaras and their scones! I absolutely love love love their scones! And there was live music too, which was an added bonus. Having a tasty meal with our loved ones, in a restaurant overlooking the hills, with slow, romantic guitar tunes playing in the background - it was magical. And the staffs were very courteous and friendly too. Given that it was our first time there, it was safe to say that they really nailed it on the first impression thing.

The next day, we just chilled at the hotel and checked-out at noon. Had lunch at Aida Daniya again before heading home.

In general, I would say that there really is not much to do in Fraser's, hence the small crowd. But I think that's the charm of it. It's the perfect spot for some peace and tranquility, away from huge crowds, nestled among the green rolling hills.
